New Mexico Cancer Care Alliance was the idea of a small group of highly respected, dedicated cancer physicians in Albuquerque.  These physicians realized that many local cancer patients left the state to receive the newest treatments that were available only through cancer research studies.  They also recognized that economic and emotional costs of travel could prevent patients from receiving access to experimental new drugs and treatments available only through research.  Patients might not be able to afford the cost of travel or might not want to leave their families, friends and other members of their support groups behind.

These doctors wanted all New Mexicans to have access to new, experimental research treatments without the expense of leaving the state.

All New Mexicans Deserve Access to the Newest Cancer Treatments!

A barrier for many physicians was the time and resources required to open and manage research studies.  Many community practices did not have the additional staff available to dedicate to the search for appropriate studies and to complete the necessary paperwork.

In February 2002, NMCCA became available to do this complex paperwork for local physicians and to provide a staff member to those doctors who did not have a nurse or coordinator to review and enroll patients.

Now, patients can speak with local physicians who they may already know and trust about whether a cancer research study might be an appropriate treatment option for them.  Joining and continuing to take part in a research study is voluntary.   With family members and friends nearby to help review the study documents, ask questions and listen to the answers, the patient may be more comfortable deciding to join a clinical research study.

NMCCA is a growing network of 100 physicians who work in private practice and in the major healthcare institutions in central, northern, and Southern New Mexico.  We work together to find the most efficient and effective ways to bring the most promising cancer treatments available through research studies (also known as cancer clinical trials) to New Mexicans.  If you would like to consider a clinical research study as part of your cancer treatment, please contact one of the physicians in the NMCCA network.

Clinical Research Study Sponsors

NMCCA works with government agencies and pharmaceutical companies that sponsor research studies to test new drugs and treatments.  To learn more about the advantages of opening a trial with NMCCA, our goals and find answers to questions trial sponsors frequently ask, please click here.
